Qubì

In the Eighties, Qubì was the first tab detergent on the market, further confirmation of Zobele’s ability to innovate. Qubì tabs were phosphate-free detergents and they significantly boosted Company sales.

“There was great excitement and enthusiasm about the production launch of Qubì dishwasher tabs” recalls Giovanna Zobele, Enrico’s sister, who worked in the company for a short time in the first in-house analysis laboratory for production control.

Qubì was the first tab detergent on the market, further confirmation of Zobele’s ability to innovate.

In the Eighties, a mucilage problem arose in the Adriatic Sea, most likely caused by phosphates present in detergents. Qubì tabs did not contain those substances, and pleas by the politicians of that time for the use of phosphate-free detergents to protect the Italian coasts, boosted sales.

This little product put Zobele in direct competition with the giant Finish, which tried to buy out its competitor on several occasions. Zobele held firm until the Nineties, when it decided to concentrate on product innovation and development, becoming a strategic partner for the world’s leading manufacturers, thus closing the Qubì line.

In the Eighties, with the move to the new production unit, the Zobele family nonetheless recognised the problems that certain workers would have in getting to the new premises, located in an area of the city which at the time was in the open countryside, and as such isolated and without any public transport.
Hence the company made agreements with Atesina, the Trento public transport company, to provide a shuttle service to take employees from the station to Via Fersina and back again at the end of the day.

Once again, the company owners showed their commitment towards maintaining a warm and comfortable working environment. This was further confirmed in other decisions, like the creation of communal areas inside the company, the canteen and  the introduction of Christmas parties.

Franco Zobele

Fulvio Zobele’s firstborn joined the company after his technical studies. Franco's entry to the family business in the early Seventies coincided with a boom in plug-in insecticides, which Franco helped to develop into numerous different versions in terms of form and technology.

Born in Trento on 3rd December 1951, Fulvio Zobele’s firstborn joined the company after his technical studies. Following in his father’s footsteps, Franco became manager of production and the technical department. At the same time, he set about searching for competitive technical component suppliers, from distant markets such as Taiwan and China, one of which would become our partner in Zobele China.

His entry to the family business in the early Seventies coincided with a boom in plug-in insecticides, which Franco helped to develop into numerous different versions in terms of form and technology. The relations with Taiwanese and Chinese suppliers gave him the idea of introducing a new heating element, which in turn allowed for an increase in production necessary to clinch one of America’s leading clients.

Thanks to his passion for machinery, something he undoubtedly inherited from his father, he devoted himself to the design and realisation of several products and patents, introducing innovative automations and machinery to the production lines, in order to guarantee an increasingly effective price-quality ratio.

On his many business trips, he forged important relationships with international clients of the Group, combining his technical skills with savvy sales management.

Via Fersina

In 1981 the move to a new plant, more suitable in terms of size and organisation, offered the chance to introduce structural upgrades and technical improvements, which soon led to the doubled production capacity of the Fabbrica Chimica Zobele.

By the 1960s, the space in the factory in Via Muredei was already too small for the growing number of workers and machinery for production.

The numerous applications made by the Zobele family to the local public administration for a new and more suitable space didn’t turn out as hoped, so the employees and workers occupied the Trento city hall in protest. The dispute ended with the purchase of a plot in Via Fersina where construction work began in 1979. 1981 marked the definitive move to the newly-built production plant.
 
“The transfer to the new premises – recalls a warehouse worker at Zobele since 1975 – was like moving to a hotel: everything was new and there was an exceptional level of comfort compared to the previous plant”.

SPIRA

Early in the Seventies, Luigi and Fulvio started travelling through Asia for finding new suppliers and new technologies linked to the natural evolution of fly traps and coils: mosquito repellent tablets with electric diffuser.

 

These cardboard tablets soaked in insecticide and placed in a plug-in electric diffuser release vapours that keep mosquitoes and other insects away. Compared to mosquito coils, the tablets do not give off smoke and are more compact-sized and practical.

Early in the Seventies, Luigi and Fulvio decided to start developing this product which appeared to be the natural evolution of fly traps and coils. While Fulvio designed the plug-in device, Luigi and his son Enrico travelled to Asia in search of a supplier of mosquito repellent tablets. They first went to Hong Kong, then Tokyo and finally Osaka, where the supply agreement was signed with a partner named King Chemicals from which - two years later - the relevant production license and first machinery were also purchased. The "Spira" line was born.

In 1976, the new product became so popular on the Italian and international markets that Zobele's turnover doubled compared to 1975 and its output increased by 100% - keeping pace with keen competition from Japan.

Enrico Zobele

Born in Trento on 30 December 1950, the first-born of Luigi Zobele, first descendant of the family’s third generation, baptised with the same name of his entrepreneurial grandfather.

Born in Trento on 30 December 1950, the first-born of Luigi Zobele, first descendant of the family’s third generation, baptised with the same name of his entrepreneurial grandfather.

Enrico Zobele, having finished his studies in business and economics with a specialisation in commercial businesses obtained from Milan’s Bocconi university, joined the company in 1973, flanking his father in the sales branch, and soon accompanying him in his long travels abroad.

Under his guidance, and marked by a strong drive and world view developed in the company of his father, he launched the internationalisation policy of the Eighties, promoting the company to the point of making it a leading multinational in its field. Its leadership in 1994 led to his appointment as CEO.

Enrico, besides his role at the helm of the company, also became a point of reference in the Trentino business scene and much more, a testament to his passion, the strategic vision of his actions and his absolute decisiveness. In the past he has filled prestigious role such as chairman of Confindustria Trento and the Trento and Rovereto Cassa di Risparmio Foundation.

He is currently President of Zobele Group and Chairman and CEO of Everel Group, the company producing electronic and electromechanical components based in Valeggio (Verona).

"Zampironi" and Mosquito Coils

At the beginning of the 1960s, mosquito coils and “zampironi” had made their appearance on the Italian market: the first produced in Lombardy, while the latter, in the shape of inverted cones, were produced by Knight Commander Zoppolato.

At the beginning of the 1960s, mosquito coils and “zampironi” had made their appearance on the Italian market: the first produced in Lombardy following a technique learned in Argentina, while the latter, in the shape of inverted cones, were produced in Venice by Knight Commander Zoppolato, owner of Premiato Laboratorio Zampironi.

The Zobele brothers, to continue developing their range of insecticides, the company’s original core product, first bought this laboratory and then succeeded, thanks to the technical documentation that became available, to internalize production, moving on to the more traditional shape of the mosquito coil.

This new product branded "Spiralette" was the result of the union of mostly organic components, in total contrast with DDT. The main ingredient was pyrethrum, an African flower similar to the daisy, from which an active ingredient, particularly repellant to insects, is extracted. The other components of the paste were sawdust, white flour and glue.

The mosquito coil is still produced today in the Trento plant and remains an important product in the range of insecticides offered by the company.

A family atmosphere

The Sixties constituted the real test of Enrico's heirs’ ability to harness the dynamics of the economic boom, without ever losing sight of the human dimension that had strongly characterized the company's origins.

The two leading products of the company, Spiralette and scouring pads, allowed the company to double its turnover in those years and gain many positions in the market.

The climate in Via Muredei remained a familial one, and its workers were well looked after. Small adjustments made the working environment comfortable: for example, there was a room with tables and stools for the lunch break and the workers’ locker rooms were equipped with showers. At certain times of the year, like Good Friday, the factory held a liturgical celebration, after which the people would all go to the Prati bar in Trento, where a large Easter breakfast was served, with cups of hot chocolate.

The Third Generation

The early 1950s were challenging times for the Zobele brothers, in the quest for new manufacturing and organizational solutions, but also rich of good news: the third generation was arriving.

The early 1950s were challenging times for the Zobele brothers, yet they were also years of hope, characterized by a desire to grow. Enrico's moral and material heritage spurred on both Luigi and Fulvio and the factory’s employees, who became increasingly involved in the quest for new manufacturing and organizational solutions.

In the midst of this future-oriented commitment to business, 1950 brought family happiness to Luigi when his first son, Enrico, was born; named after his grandfather, he would go on to play a pivotal role in the management of the company. A few years later Enrico’s sister, Giovanna, arrived.

The following year, Fulvio celebrated the birth of his first son Franco, who inherited his father’s aptitude for applied research and his passion for improving processes and products. Alessandra, Luisa and Giovanni followed, with the latter also playing a part in the company’s history.

The third generation of the Zobele family had, then, well and truly arrived.

Steel Wool

A clever intuition combined with talent led to the birth of a new line of products developed in steel wool rolls: the scouring pads for domestic use, a product widely used in the ‘50s and ‘60s.

Fascinated by an article read in the newspaper Corriere della Sera about production machines for steel wool, Luigi started looking for a technical solution for the production of scouring pads for domestic use, a product widely used in the ‘50s and ‘60s.

In Italy there was no suitable machinery for the job, and the German machines were very costly, but the two brothers managed to find a unit at an acceptable price, to which Fulvio made the necessary modifications and improvements to ease the production process. The rolls of steel wool that were produced took the name of "pagliette" (scouring pads), whose abrasive function was considered very useful for cleaning specific surfaces.

And so, clever intuition combined with talent led to the birth of a new line of products, developed in steel wool rolls with 3 varieties of grain, called “Nazionale”, “Americana” and “Mobilieri”, and in two products for cleaning pots: rolls and soap-filled scouring pads.

The booth is at Amsterdam RAI Holland Complex (BOOTH N-431).

Employees as part of the family

On reading the will of Enrico Zobele Senior, after his death in 1950, it was discovered that he had left very precise instructions for five longstanding employees in recognition of the services rendered to the company.

On 30th October 1950, Luigi and Fulvio had to emotionally and organisationally deal with the death of their father.

On reading the will, it was discovered that Enrico Zobele Senior had left very precise instructions for five longstanding employees (Giovanni Girardi, Luigi Zadra, Vittorio Bertoldi, Beniamino Cattoni and Pietro Filippini): a payment of one thousand lira for each year of work, “for the services rendered to my company". This was in recognition of the people and families who had grown up with the Zobele family and had expanded, from father to son, relative to relative, the company structure of employees and workers.

Worthy of a special mention are the Bertoldi and Zadra families, close friends of Enrico Senior who witnessed the launch of the first business and whose descendants for generations to come would work in the company with the same feeling of gratitude and belonging of their parents and their grandparents.

Provisions were also included in the will for certain sums of money to be given to charitable organisations in Trento.

Second Zobele Generation

During the post-war period, the new Zobele generation had to immediately face the threat of DDT and to start rethinking the products and the target markets.

 

During the post-war period, Trentino found itself in a state of underdevelopment and the Zobele Chemical Products Factory promptly set about making some structural and organisational changes. Enrico Zobele Senior began to pass down the secrets of the business and management skills to his two sons, Luigi and Fulvio. He died in 1950, but only after having entrusted his heirs with the helm of the company.

The new Zobele generation had to immediately face the threat of DDT arriving from the US to the Italian market: "dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane" was a chemical product initially used to prevent malaria, typhoid and other insect-borne diseases, later converted into a generic pesticide in spray format. Simple and effective, it put the demand for the flycatcher at risk and, therefore, it became essential to expand the range of products in the Zobele catalogue. This convinced the two brothers to start rethinking the products and the target markets.

Enrico Zobele Senior's innate ability to set his sights on different markets, even very distant ones, was highly valuable at that time, when it was necessary to tap into new trade outlets and find new countries to recover the raw materials necessary for production.

Via Muredei

In 1939, the  Fabbrica Chimica Zobele was able to invest in the construction of a larger premises with offices, production area and warehouse, moving to Via Muredei 2/4 in Trento. At full capacity, the factory had more than 300 employees and a monthly turnover of one million Lire...

 

At the end of the 1930s, the Fabbrica Chimica Zobele, at the peak of its prosperity, was able to invest in the construction of a larger premises.

In 1939, the company moved to Via Muredei 2/4 - Trento, into a structure made up of three spaces: one building for offices, one for production and the third as warehouse.  At full capacity, the factory had more than 300 employees who achieved a monthly turnover of one million Lire, while the product catalogue expanded.

Located between two railway lines, one national and the other local, both strategic targets of military bombings during World War II, Enrico Zobele Senior decided to limit damage in 1943 by transferring all the machinery into cellars in less sensitive areas nearby. All this was possible thanks to the collaboration of all the workers, who felt increasingly bound to the company by a bond of solidarity that transcended any roles and positions they held.

Fulvio Zobele

Fulvio Zobele (1923 - 2014), second born son of Enrico Zobele senior and Emma Hafner, gave his most significant contribution to the family business in the development of the production processes.

Fulvio Zobele (1923 - 2014), second born son of Enrico Zobele senior and Emma Hafner, together with his brother Luigi was a key player in the development of the family business until the 2000s and gave his most significant contribution in the development of the production processes.
 
Having graduated in Mechanical Engineering, he joined the company in 1947 with the initial task of travelling around Italy to promote Zobele products. Thanks to his engineering and technical skills, Fulvio found ever more innovative solutions to improve the production processes that led to the start-up of several new lines (e.g. steel wool). Together with Luigi, he guided the family business to success in the field of insecticides in the Fifties and Seventies. Fulvio, moreover, introduced the techniques for the production of anti-mosquito coils, after having discovered the availability of the patent. In the Seventies he designed the first anti-mosquito electrical device.
 
Remembered as “l’ingener Fulvio”, of a calm and quiet nature, he loved to play the accordion and play with his dog in his free time, but his real passion remained mechanics.

First Industrial Automation

In the second half of the 1920s, the Fabbrica Industrie Chimiche Enrico Zobele was enjoying a period of prosperity that allowed investment in new machineries for fly catchers...

The second half of the 1920s was characterized by a worldwide economic recovery: industrial production and trade grew while the monetary system began to work again. However, the deflationary policies of Fascism combined with the effects of the financial crisis of 1929 aggravated the economic situation in Trentino, causing the closure of many banking institutions and the consequent loss of deposit savings of the local population.

Despite this negative economic climate, the Fabbrica Industrie Chimiche Enrico Zobele was enjoying a period of prosperity that allowed investment in new machineries for fly catchers, the first of which was bought in Prague and adapted by an ingenious local mechanic, who then, by the end of the 30’s, constructed another 7 automatic machines, increasing production up to 130,000 pieces per day.

Viscum Album

The "Aquila" Mistletoe, sold in small red and yellow tin boxes, was part of the Zobele catalogue until the 60s. The mistletoe was also the basic raw material for the production of flycatchers...

The mistletoe, Viscum album, is a rootless parasitic plant that exploits its host plant. It has evergreen leaves with poisonous berries and a strong scent. The paste obtained from the processing of the berries creates a sticky substance used to capture small birds, commonly widespread at the beginning of 20th century, for personal entertainment or for sale on the local market.

Luigi Zobele

Luigi Zobele (1921 - 2008) the eldest son of Enrico Zobele senior and Emma Hafner, together with his brother Fulvio, was a fundamental reference in the development of the Chemical Products Factory until the 2000s.

Luigi Zobele (1921 - 2008) the eldest son of Enrico Zobele senior and Emma Hafner, together with his brother Fulvio, was a fundamental reference in the development of the Chemical Products Factory until the 2000s.

After high school he graduated in Chemical Engineering and joined the company in 1946. Luigi was the one who had the brilliant intuition on the potential success of steel wool, which allowed the company to grow in contrast with the local economy of the 1950s, still behind in the industrial sector. Together with his brother, he worked to promote the return of Zobele in the field of insecticides, starting the first production of anti-mosquito spirals in the sixties and then the mats in the seventies. The positive path in this sector will continue with the entry into the company of his son Enrico, when started the business of the first electrical devices, which led the company in 1975 to double the turnover and to increase the productive capacity by 100%.

Known as “l’Ingegner Gino” and well-liked by everyone, he is remembered as a person with a spontaneous and extroverted character, determined and pragmatic, with a strong commercial instinct, a traveler who was constantly looking for new products and markets for the family company.

The first Zobele business was born in Trento (Italy), located at the beginning in a large room in via Mariani 8 and then in a building of about forty meters for ten behind the old family house, located in Corso III Novembre, 20, where started the proper industrial production

 

Founded by the Romans, expanding in medieval times and historically famous for the Council and its Bishops, formerly part of Austro-Hungarian Empire, at the end of the First World War the city of Trento was annexed to Italy.

The entrepreneurial spirit of the young Enrico Zobele remained, despite the epochal change, determined to face the negative context; a new currency and the wartime destruction of infrastructures, industries and agricultural areas made any supplying of goods activity particularly difficult.

Within this context the first Zobele business was born, located at the beginning in a large room in via Mariani 8, Trento and then in a building of about forty meters for ten behind the old family house, located in Corso III Novembre, 20, where started the proper industrial production, centred mainly on flypapers and birdlime.

Fly paper is a strip of adhesive paper, used in homes, coated with particularly sweet substances that attract insects, mostly flies, which on touching the adhesive strip remain stuck. This is an effective way to eliminate all insects that contaminate food or, for example, the surfaces of the dishes.

The "Perfetto Spiralette” flycatcher was a large consumption and maximum utility product which resolved the problem of insects in the early years of the 1900s. This was a very common problem in both families and activities located near cattle breeding or bogs.

Produced for seasonal use with peak demand in the hot months, customer’ orders were received in the autumn prior to the following summer months, with production beginning in spring and ending in July.

This product was one of the first items to be manufactured in Zobele, asserting its commercial importance from 1919 to the 70s.

Enrico Zobele Senior (1886 - 1950) was a visionary entrepreneur, laying the foundations of Zobele Group. Born to native Italian speakers originally from San Sebastiano, Folgaria, Trentino, he attended the primary and secondary school in Trento and Rovereto, before continuing his education in...

Enrico Zobele Senior (1886 - 1950) was a visionary entrepreneur, laying the foundations of Zobele Group. Born to native Italian speakers originally from San Sebastiano, Folgaria, Trentino, he attended the primary and secondary school in Trento and Rovereto, before continuing his education in technical-commercial subjects in Vienna, one the liveliest capital cities in Europe.

On finishing his studies, he found work in a Viennese bank where a loyal customer asked him to become a distributor for his products; shoe grease, wax and self-adhesive strips. Enrico accepted the offer, and after a short time requested a license for production in order to start up a new business in Trentino. The 1st World War put a brake on his ambitious project but, as soon as Trentino and Alto Adige were ceded to The Kingdom of Italy in 1919, Enrico opened the first Zobele small production area in Trento. The following year he married Emma Hafner, with whom he had two sons, Luigi and Fulvio, who took over the reins of the company when, after 30 years of extraordinary growth in the 30’s and the restart up of business following the 2nd World War, Enrico decided to retire from managing the business.

Zobele Group announces the opening of its seventh global plant, located in Garland, Texas in the United States.

This factory will begin by producing products in Zobele’s growing Fabric & Laundry Care product category and it is expected to begin commercial shipments in the fourth quarter of 2018. This is a new product line for Zobele Group and is fully incremental revenue on top of the existing products manufactured in its other six plants. This factory has available space to support planned growth with key Zobele Group customers.

The staffing of the Zobele US team has already started and it will continue during the coming months, targeting highly capable people with the ability to grow with the facility as it expands.

In parallel with the analogous activities carried out in  June and August, on the 28th  of September every employee at the various Group companies arrived at work to find a new “hook”, illustrating a relevant image promoting the saving of Paper.
 
The promotional material (on line and off line) translated in the 7 different local languages has reached every single employee of the Group and has hopefully encouraged them to reflect on this precious resource: PAPER.
 
This campaign is in line with the WE CARE strategic programme, which is embedded within Zobele Group's Social Responsibility Policy and which promotes a conscientious approach to the environment and people.

This week Zobele Group has launched a global internal communication project, involving all sites of the Group, concerning the raising of awareness of environmental issues, in particular focusing on ENERGY SAVING.

On the 29th of June every employee at the various sites of the Group, starting from China through Singapore, India, Bulgaria, Italy, Spain, Brazil and ending in Mexico (due to difference in time zones), found a “hook” displayed at their working area showing simple tips on how to use everyday resources in the most efficient way, optimize consumption and cut waste, so making a small but significant contribution to conserving the environment.
 

The promotional material is in 7 different local languages in order to effectively reach every single employee of the Zobele Group. At the same time an online campaign was launched on the intranet platform to reach every PC user worldwide.
 

This campaign is in line with the internal WE CARE strategic programme, which is embedded within Zobele Group's Social Responsibility Policy and which promotes a conscientious approach to the environment and people.
